Poletna šola za aktuarje v Celovcu

The University of Klagenfurt – specifically the M/O/T (School of Management, https://mot.ac.at) and the Institute of Statistics (Univ.-Prof. Dr. Michaela Szölgyenyi) – is planning to hold a 2.5-day “Summer School for Actuaries” on “Climate Risk Modeling” in May 2025. The schedule includes 10 sessions of 90 minutes each.

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Erwan Koch, Managing Scientific Director of the Expertise Center for Climate Extremes at the University of Lausanne (https://www.unil.ch/ecce/home.html), will be one of our speakers, along with his colleague Dr. Ryan Cotsakis, who will lead the first two days of the Summer School. Additionally, Carina Götzen, an actuary (DAV/AVÖ) and consultant at Meyerthole Siems, will handle the final half-day, ensuring a practical connection between the theoretical aspects of Climate Risk Modeling and the insurance industry.

The Summer School aims to provide a comprehensive theoretical and practical understanding of climate risk modeling. Using mathematical and statistical models, participants will simulate possible effects of climate change and discuss their implications for insurers. Attendees of the 2025 Summer School will delve into the significance of natural hazards, learn about the latest developments and methods in Climate Risk Modeling, and receive an introduction to the generalized extreme value distribution (GEV), including Gumbel, Fréchet, and Weibull distribution functions.

From theoretical foundations to practical applications, participants will learn how to model extreme events such as heavy rainfall, storms, and hail.
